GIRL SCOUT TROOP #1099 OF NHP DONATES TO RMH-LI
New Hyde Park, NY (May 2011) – On Friday, May 20th, the Girl Scouts from Junior Troop #1099 brought various Wish List items to The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island (RMH-LI). Some of the items included batteries, umbrellas, cleaning supplies and infant toys which were all purchased from the money raised through their Girl Scout cookie sales.
“Everyone at The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island is very grateful for the hard work put in by Troop #1099,” said Matthew Campo, RMH-LI Executive Director. “The Wish List items they donated will be very helpful for our resident families during their stay. The desserts they baked were delicious, as well!”
While the girls were at RMH-LI they also baked for the resident families. They made frosted cupcakes, a confetti cake, vanilla and chocolate pudding and a chocolate frosted vanilla cake with a jelly center. Mr. John Buglione, a RMH-LI volunteer, also gave the girls and adult chaperones a tour of the House.
The Girl Scouts who took part in this event from Troop #1099 were: Justine Grosso, Olivia Le, Ciara Lennon, Sara Salomon, Larissa Scandura, Mariya Thanawala, Danielle Torrisi and Michelle Wisnewski. Marie Scandura and Lisa Torrisi, the troop’s co-leaders, were also in attendance along with two parents, Laura Grosso and Mary Lennon. Troop #1099 has been working on their Bronze Award, which they will receive on June 8th at a ceremony at the New Hyde Park Road School.
The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island is a ‘home-away-from-home’ for families who are caring for seriously ill children undergoing medical treatment in area hospitals. Located in New Hyde Park on the campus of the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York, the House accommodates families in a warm and supportive environment. Since opening in 1986, approximately 15,000 families from the United States and more than 80 countries around the world have been served. Many of the families are from Queens, Suffolk and Nassau Counties, as well as the surrounding Metropolitan area.
